Position: Mechanic
Location: Bus Garage
Start: March 2025
Hours: 8:00 - 4:30 p.m. M - F, 12-month position
SUMMARY:
The position performs skilled tasks and coordination associated with the maintenance, repair, and upgrade of district buses and other vehicles.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure that all vehicles are maintained and operating efficiently by performing routine and preventative maintenance on the District buses and other vehicles.
- Repair, rebuild, and make necessary adjustments on all vehicle systems
- Perform trouble-shooting and related repairs on District vehicles
- Provide information regarding equipment and vehicle replacement needs
- Ensure that vehicles comply with state standards and participate in the Annual State Police Bus Inspection
- Work responsibly and cooperatively with the Director of Transportation and staff
- Ensure that the transportation shop is safe and clean
- Ensure that established policies and procedures are followed
- Be available to report to the garage at any time prior to the regular starting time when weather conditions or other emergencies necessitate servicing the fleet
- Ensure the proper care and maintenance of tools and equipment
- Attend any training to properly maintain vehicles in the fleet
- Abide by all District safety protocols
- Drive vehicles (buses, vans, trucks) as needed or directed, including bus routes
REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or general education degree, required
- Completion of a trade apprenticeship program or trade school certification course of study, is a plus.
- Prior experience working as a mechanic in a garage or mechanical field-experience is preferred.
- MV CLASS 7 MECHANIC LIC is required or will need to be achieved within one year of employment
- School Bus license is required or will need to be achieved within one year of employment
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Experience and/or training in computerized parts inventory and vehicle repair/maintenance record systems
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and community members
- Ability to perform duties with an awareness of all inspection regulations, PA traffic and vehicle laws and regulations, safety codes and district requirements, and school board policies
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:
- Valid driver's license with good driving record
- Class B commercial driver’s license with school bus and passenger endorsement, with the Air Brake Restriction Removed
- ASE Diesel Certification preferred
- Freon recovery license
- Welding and machining experience preferred
- Ability to push, pull and carry a minimum of 50 lbs
The successful candidate will be required to take a post-offer, pre-employment drug test and work capacity evaluation ("WCE"). The WCE includes various physical attributes, including push, pull, lift, and carry.
