Description

Position: Substitute Teacher Aide

 

Hourly Rate:  $15.00 per hour 

 

SUMMARY 

Supervise and assist children in all school related instructional and non-instructional activities. Provide clerical assistance in support of classroom and program functions and activities.   Aides are not responsible for the design, direction or evaluation of the teaching-learning process.  The role of the aide and the mix of duties will vary according to the assignment.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise and assist children in all school-related areas and/or activities, including classrooms, resource rooms, cafeterias, study halls, playgrounds, assemblies, field trips and on and off buses.
  • Perform reinforcement instructional services including activities in the visual, auditory, motor and cognitive areas.
  • Perform delegated instructional services, such as assisting students as a learner’s helper in independent study projects or make-up work.
  • Assist in the conduct of co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
  • Secure, operate and/or assist students in the use of teaching devices such as audio-visual equipment and computers.
  • Provide custodial care services such as moving children in wheelchairs and lifting, feeding or toileting.
  • Utilize safe physical management techniques to manage student behavior.
  • Perform routine clerical duties including typing, duplicating, collating, distributing and filing materials.
  • Other duties as assigned 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Completion of at least two years of postsecondary study (60 credits) or an associate’s degree.   

One year of experience in a setting involving direct contact with children is required.

  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community
  • Effective problem-solving skills
  • Ability to read, analyze and carry out written information and instructions. 
  • Ability to write simple reports and correspondence
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff, students, or parents in one-on-one and small group situations
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as fraction, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume
  • Proficient use of educational technology 
  • Push, pull, carry up to 70 pounds
